Yoga Therapy

All virtuous actions bring pleasure and all vicious actions bring pain.

                                                                       Yogasutra

Patanjali (one wearing yellow robe) was the very first yogi to systemize and to collate the ancient knowledge of yoga in a text called Yogasutra. Before him, as other Indian traditions and philosophies yoga was also handed down as an oral tradition. Its origin is lost in the mists of time though the history suggests that yoga has been practiced in India for over five thousand years.

Yoga is a discipline of self-awareness that helps the parctioner to integrate the body and the mind. By harmonizing the two, yoga helps to manage negative and unconstructive thought patterns and assist the mind to work with, rather than against, the body. Hath yoga teaches ways of physical discipline of the body through postures asanas and breathing exercises known as Pranayam.

According to Patanjali, yoga brings about the suspension of the mind’s waves vrittis, resulting in mindfulness, which means the ability to pay attention to your life, experiencing what is happening around and within you, rather than being consumed by internal mental convolutions while life passes you by. To achieve this Patanjali advocates practice abhayas and non attachment vairag. It does not mean abandonment of all worldly goods, rather relinquishment of assumptions about yourself and the world.
